Back with another WIAW post!
So, tonight was my first class back at Kickboxing. I did Cardio Kickboxing a few years ago and loved, loved, loved it. I have never been in such good shape as I was when I got my ass handed to me in that class once a week. I supplemented it with running a few times a week, too but wow. It was great. Then I moved, bought a house, life got crazy and I couldn’t keep up. However, now that I have a wedding coming up in a few months I really want to step it up. Hence why when I saw a Groupon deal for 10 kickboxing classes next to my gym I was all over it.
Most of today I was shaking in my black heels anticipating the ass kicking I was about to get tonight. I tried to eat smart since I knew I needed energy for tonight but didn’t want to eat too much before the class.
I made sure to load up on some carbs and protein this morning with my whole wheat english muffin and peanut butter and a banana. And black coffee, which is a given on any day. :) This is where the majority of my calories came from today. You might notice in the pic that I tend to consider peanut butter its own entrée at times. Hey, this breakfast kept me full from 8am to after 1:00 thanks to all that protein.
I lightened things up a little for lunch. Mixed greens salad, tomatoes, cucumber and 1-2 tbsp of lemon hummus for another kick of protein and some healthy fat. I still wasn’t too hungry from breakfast so this was completely enough.
Luna Bar and Coconut Green Tea. Calories: 180. Protein 7g. Doing that from memory so I hope I have those stats right. I mentioned in my last WIAW that I am not the hugest snacker and I try not to eat for the sake of eating (lately anyway) but today I knew I needed something in my system to take me through class tonight. Especially since I wouldn’t be home until later on.
When I got out of class I really wasn’t hungry. I came home, showered and felt like even though I wasn’t hungry I should probably eat something. So I mixed a can of tuna together with a 1/3 avocado, tomato and a squeeze of a lemon slice and ground pepper. I ate that with a half of a wheat pita (30 calories, there’s 60 in a whole) and now I’m super full and not wanting anything. Which is probably good but I feel a little gross.
Next time I’ll listen to my gut (literally) and do what I used to do, which is hydrate and not eat after kickboxing. Who can eat after sweating so much and working that hard? My belly is not about that.
So how did the class go? Awesome! I loved it and remembered how much I miss it. I actually felt like it went by so fast, one minute we were warming up and the next we were cooling down. Am I crazy to say I wish we went longer than 50 mins? Probably?
Anyway, I am excited for the next 5 weeks of taking this twice a week. Oh yeah and talk to me tomorrow after I feel how sore I (hope I) will be, hopefully I don’t change my tune!
Thanks to Jenn at Peas and Crayons for hosting this WIAW! Hop over to her page to see what everyone else ate recently!
Here are some pics from the weekend while I wind down and get ready for the week ahead. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there today, especially mine :) <3
#crazycatpeople. Yes, we do take our cat with us when we stay with Jeff’s parents in NH. He’s not the hugest fan of the car but he does pretty well and loves the change of scenery once we get where we’re going.
Morning coffee while outside enjoying the sun. Even though it’s mid June I still feel like the summer is just kicking off. Maybe because Memorial Day weekend was freezing?
Soaking in the sun.

Father’s Day Feast. My favorite orzo salad ever courtesy of my mom. There was way more salmon and also some steak on that plate but I gobbled it up before I thought to take a pic. I also found a love for Maine Blackbear Ice Cream. Raspberry Ice Cream with mini chocolate truffles. Wow.
My First WIAW post! So excited to join the party on Jenn’s page today. Check out Peas and Crayons to see what everyone else is posting this week.
This WIAW showcases the eats of today.
Plain 0% Fat Chob, Bear Naked Fit Granola (Triple Berry), and a Vita Coconut Water – no flavor just plain coco water.
Later came the coffee:
Green Mountain Dark Magic.
Salad bar from the cafeteria at work. I had some mixed iceberg/romaine lettuce, topped with few slices of tomato and cucumber, and a tabbouleh type of mix along with a small dollop of hummus. And a half of a half of a white bread pita. Carb control!
I met up with my friend Harmony and some of her bridesmaids to pick up our dresses for her wedding after work. I can’t wait to wear mine although I literally cannot gain even a half a lb between now and then. Hopefully that won’t be a problem anyway since my wedding is a month after hers!
After we looked for some shoes, we had dinner at a new to me restaurant in the area, Bahama Breeze. I had a turkey burger, minus most of that bread topped with lots of peppery arugula, tomato and avocado. On the side was a tomato, basil salad with a little balsamic vinegar. I also had that delicious unsweetened pomegranate iced green tea = yum. All in all that’s a healthy dinner! That dress ain’t got nothing on me now.
June’s edition of WIAW spotlights Sensible Snacking. However, there were no snacks today for me. I am not a huge snacker and I really try not to eat between meals if I am not hungry. Today was successful in that regard. Other days= different story!
Thanks again to Jenn for hosting!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Here are some pics from mine:
Marathon retail date with una amiga major
Saturday detox in full effect. Ahi Tuna and mixed greens, tomato and avocado <3
Loved it. Had to. XXI
Morning drive to the ocean with my boy.
American Textile Museum’s Behind the Veil Exhibit. As two future brides, another friend and I figured this was a fitting way to spend a Sunday Afternoon.
Life Alive, Lowell, MA. Ridiculously Healthy veggie wrap + green juice with Kale, Cucumber, Celery, Ginger and Lemon.
Followed up by my long lost love of Watermelon Beer from Beer Works. <3
Like the new look? (Oh hi, by the way)
Pretty exciting, right? Thank you, customizable themes in WordPress! This is what I’ve been missing! I no longer need to pretend I am a technologically advanced person with this whole blog thing. Now I can choose a theme, then make small tweaks to my liking to show some “personalization” with the click of a button. No more late nights googling things like “html code to change headers” and other crazy stuff that I don’t know what it means. Who am I? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Remember the old Myspace themes? That’s more my speed.
Because let’s face it, all I really care about is making this thing look pretty so when I abandon it for weeks on end spammers have something aesthetically pleasing to bounce around. Don’t be surprised, by the way, if the next time you visit this page it’s baby blue or light purple. It’s so simple to change colors now and I admit to having a bit of the “Sleeping Beauty’s dress” syndrome. Remember when the little fairies kept changing Sleeping Beauty’s dress to pink to blue and back again? It’s totally a thing.
Anyway, I am super excited for this new look and I feel that it really fits me much better than the old TurnUpTheEat theme. More in your face distracting color, less white space that I felt like should have been filled with gorgeous photos of perfectly styled food that I never take with my non-existent DSLR. I roll with the iphone pics for now. I’m good with that.
I also cleaned out my user registration list which I am pretty sure was only fishers and spammers but if I actually deleted a real person, I apologize and feel free to re-register :). I also have no idea how this theme change will affect (effect/affect??) all my old pages and links so just a head’s up that things might be a little weird for a bit while I try to clean things up around here.
Oh, then there’s always the “food and fitness” aspect that also needs to be addressed…about that…
Sunday night again?! Sigh.
So, my week last week started off great with lots of healthy meals, a good workout and an awesome ass kicking yoga session on Tuesday night. Then I ate some incarnation of pizza for dinner the following 3 nights. I feel this to be excessive but at least it was all healthier kinds with thin crust or flatbread…right?
Wednesday Jeff and I met friends out for dinner where there were not a lot of healthy options, Thursday I had my very first fitting for my wedding dress so my mom and I wound up grabbing pizzas on our way back to my house. Friday, I admit the last thing I ever wanted was pizza, however there was no food in the house other than wheat pitas, goat cheese and a tomato so I improvised.
It was meh but it got the job done.
Lunches and breakfasts definitely made up for all that, thankfully. I was very disciplined and brought my usual yogurts with fruit and granola or ate the last of the steel cut oats I made last Sunday for breakfasts. Lunches were sadly lacking in leafy greens (except for 1) but still heavy on the veggies, healthy fats (hummus/goat cheese) and fruit.
Here are some examples:
This week is going to be busy again toward the end of the week so my goal is to make the first part as productive and clean eating as possible. I tried to keep this in mind while meal planning and grocery shopping today.
I ended up with a ton of fruit. I seriously hope Jeff plans to help me eat all this because I would hate to see it go to waste. I may have to get creative but hey, I’ll take the challenge :)
Cantaloupe, Mango, Grapes, Blueberries and Strawbs. That is a lot of fruit. Isn’t it so pretty though? I haven’t had grapes in ages so I am looking forward to those this week.
Blackened Tofu with Quinoa Edamame and Corn Salad
Weeknight Chili (aka Ground Turkey, Black Beans, Tomatoes, Corn all cooked up in a skillet)
Chicken with Roasted Red Peppers and Feta over Spinach
Back up: BBQ Chicken Pizza?
These are definitely subject to change depending on my mood but it’s what I have on hand after my shopping trip today. I also always keep some dough in the freezer for last minute dinners at home.
Thurs: Off – Jeff’s Birthday Dinner with his Fam
Fri: Off – Wedding Tasting!
Sat: Hoping to get in a run or the gym in the morning.
Again, this is a tentative schedule but I want to do my best to stick to it! This week was WEAK. Above shows potentially 4 days of exercise which would be awesome to get it all in. Wish me luck!!
I am so glad to be back in action and feeling 100% again. I finally got to participate in my own Healthy Monday yesterday and it felt great!
Breakfast was a Pom Chobani with these juicy, organic blueberries I picked up from Whole Foods last week and my go-to Triple Berry Bear Naked granola.
Lunch was a change up from the norm. A can of tuna, drained and mixed with cucumber slices, tomatoes, and carrots. Then I drizzled a tiny bit of olive oil over it with some lemon juice and fresh ground pepper. So good with a Whole Wheat Flax Pita on the side. This isn’t a lunch I make often because its a little more time consuming than a salad and I hate getting tuna water on me so early in the morning…ugh. But I’m always glad I did it by lunch time.
It started snowing during the last part of the day yesterday and traffic was insane trying to leave work so it was the perfect night to do a workout in the basement gym at work. I was kind of hoping to get to my actual gym after work to do the machines but I after I saw the snow traffic I decided not to fight it.
Healthy Monday Workout
I ran a full 2 miles on the treadmill then walked it to 3 miles. Not bad for my first time back running after 2 weeks! Then I stretched it out for a good while and did 2 sets of squats 20 reps each with a medicine ball. I’m feeling those squats today!
I came home and literally whipped dinner together so fast since it was getting late. It wasn’t bad!
That’s chicken sauteed with some spices and a little olive oil, steamed green beans and roasted sweet potatoes with a little olive oil and cinnamon. I had never tried that sweet potato combo before but it worked! The brought such a fall-ish, warming taste that I loved.
This morning, I took advantage of the extra large batch of steel cut oats I made on Sunday morning. I brought some of the leftovers, along with some blueberries, a little extra almond milk and a tiny bit of honey in a container to work and put it in the microwave for breakfast.
So, I’ll come clean now and admit that the grocery store had no spring mix or spinach the other day which explains the lack of greens in my life. Hence this “salad” with cucs, carrots, tomatoes, and a little goat cheese and hummus. I ate a little less than the whole wheat, flax pita with that and then had an apple for a snack.
And now I sit here typing this while eating a very breakfasty dinner of Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Muffin with Almond Butter and half of a banana and some tea.
And with that, I am off to take a Candlelight Vinyasa Yoga class. Really hoping I don’t regret this almond butter decision at yoga tonight.
How did your week start off?
I am so excited! Today was the first day in weeks I woke up without feeling like there was a block of splintery wood in my chest. My energy is back and my head is feeling less stuffy. What a sickness that was, ugh.
Either way, I have just a few short updates for today before I start
rebuilding my life doing a major house clean to rid all these germs.
1. I cannot WAIT to get moving again. Whether that’s back in the gym, at the yoga studio, or running around outside, I am ready! The past week here it’s been like 10 degrees which is freeeezing. I heard some guy on the radio say he went for a run the other morning and it was 2 degrees. That’s just insane to me. I draw the line of running outside when the temps drop into the 30s. That’s cold enough for me, thank you!
2. I decided where I am going to register for our wedding last night! I pulled an “I’m 22″ moment and stayed up until 2 am researching all different stores and products and tips. I chose 3 stores I am so excited for and I am hoping to go visit them in person this weekend to see a few things, maybe even do a little scanning of items. I’ll never forget when I saw Jessica Simpson scanning all her items for her registry on Newlyweds. I couldn’t wait for my day with the scanner. So fun!
‘Cuz you should neva forget yo’ etiquette.
3. I am also excited to plan some healthy and rejuventating meals for the week. The past two weeks have had some ups but also some downs. Mostly thanks to being sick and devoid of all energy and crazy work schedules for Jeff and I. Most of the time, cooking to eat alone is kind of depressing. Sometimes.
Perhaps a take on a fall harvest salad will make an appearance? Filling, so nutritious and tasty!
I am off to attach this house.
Check it out!
Have you guys been wondering how it’s still possible to eat locally and seasonally when it’s the dead of winter? It IS possible! Check out my post over on LocalInSeason to find out!
And don’t miss Michelle from The Economical Eater’s recipe for Parsnip Soup while you’re there! It’s a warming and perfect soup for this time of year.
Last night, I had an epiphany.
Two words: Zucchini. Pasta.
It wasn’t actually my epiphany since I certainly didn’t invent this. However, I wish I did.
All this time I have been shunning pasta since I am all set with the refined flours and unnecessary carbs. Plus, although if I ever do eat pasta I try to make sure it’s made with 100% whole wheat, I have to admit the texture is a little cardboardish. Then, there’s that feeling you get after eating a whole plate of this stuff. Talk about overstuffed, lethargic and food babies. It just stopped being worth it to me so I haven’t paid much attention to it lately.
However, driving home from work last night in the cold snowy weather I tried to decide what to make for dinner. My mind wandered back to a saucy, warm pasta dinner but I really didn’t want to blow all those calories and carbs on pasta.
I decided it was a perfect night to experiment with zucchini pasta. Not pasta with zucchini. Actually using strands of zucchini in place of spaghetti. I was skeptical at first. Then, I was blown away.
OK, zucchini pasta is definitely not the real thing. It’s not as chewy or thick as real pasta and almost kind of melts in your mouth (in a good way) thanks to the water content. But I was more than pleasantly surprised that with just a little olive oil and heat it looked and acted just like real pasta. I added cherry tomatoes, some chopped yellow squash, basil, ground pepper and some feta and it was so satisfying. I wished I had made more!
So much so,that I made a different version again tonight!
With marinara, yellow squash and some chicken.
I hope you’re ready because you’ll be seeing zucchini pasta again.
Weekly Planning and Workouts
As far as weekly planning for meals and workouts go I’ve kind of been taking it day by day. I’m still not even feeling 90% thanks to the cold from hell I came down with last week. Night’s have been especially bad. On top of that, I’ve been doing the grocery shopping day by day too, just grabbing stuff I’ll need for dinner and work the next day. This is not the ideal situation. But at this point, I have plans for the rest of the week so there’s really no point to do a big trip now.
Needless to say, work outs haven’t been…in existence either. Womp Womp. I’m looking forward to this weekend when I hopefully will be a little better and can get back into it. Right now, my lungs are so damaged that I get out breath walking up the stairs. No bueno.
On the plus side, meals have been pretty good this week! You obviously know about my new dinner obsession.
Breakfasts today and yesterday:
Cantaloupe cubes and Peanut Butter on a wheat English muffin and black coffee.
0% Fage Greek Yogurt with sliced banana and Bear Naked Fit Triple Berry Crunch Granola. Unpictured black coffee from Dunkin Donuts on the way to work.
Monday was a lovely salad bar salad from Whole Foods consisting of lots of spinach with broccoli salad on top. I was in need of some serious greens! Pineapple Coconut Water Naked juice was on the side which was delicious as was a juicy green apple which is unpictured.
Today was a bowl of Turkey Kale Soup with Navy Beans from the cafe at work and I was surprised how good it turned out to be! On the side is a half of a turkey sandwich on 100% whole wheat bread with tomato and spring mix. I removed the top layer of bread so I really wound up with 1/4 of a turkey sandwich and soup.
This made me inspired to buy a stability ball! Or at least try one at the gym.
